Suspect shot and killed after stabbing police officers on N3
A suspect has been shot and killed by police after attacking two officials with a knife on the N3.
Police were transporting the suspect from the Nigel Magistrate’s Court to the Johannesburg prison on Monday afternoon.
Ekuhuruleni emergency Services spokesperson William Ntladi says the incident took place on the N3 north between Barry Marais on ramp and the Leondale off-ramp.
"The suspect managed to stab the two officials with the knives that he had on himself. The suspect was unfortunately shot and killed on-site," he said.
The freeway was closed for traffic on Monday afternoon to allow police and investigating officers are still on scene.
"The N3 is completely closed for traffic flow on the northbound. All motorists who are using the N3 will have to off ramp at the R550 or on Barry Marais in Vosloorus and use alternative routes," adds Ntladi.
One police officer is in a critical condition, while the other is in a serious but stable.
