A police officer from Viljoenskroon Police Station in the Free State is in a critical condition in hospital after being stabbed on Wednesday morning.

The officers responded to a call from a man who complained about his 21-year-old son’s unruly behaviour at night at home.
Upon arrival, it is understood that the suspect started to attack the officers with a knife.
The officer was stabbed in the neck.
Police spokesperson Malebo Khosana says police called for backup, but the suspect continued to attack all the officers despite the use of pepper spray.
"The Crime Prevention Unit found the suspect still battling with Sergeant Pieterse stabbing him in the lower abdomen. Live ammunition was used to stop the suspect as he showed no intention to stop. The suspect was shot on the right arm and lower abdomen.
"He was certified dead on the scene by the paramedics. Sergeant Pieterse was transferred to a medical facility in Kroonstad for further medical attention where he is in a critical but stable condition."
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating a case of murder.
