Suspects in R5.7m UIF fraud case granted bail

Six suspects accused of defrauding the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) of R5.7 million have been granted R5 000 bail each by the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.

They appeared in court in Pretoria on Monday.
The funds were intended to benefit at least 1 400 employees through the Temporary Employer/Employee Relief Scheme (TERS) established by the government to mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown on the economy.

Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale says if the accused fail to pay their bail, they will be re-arrested and placed in custody.
The case was postponed to September 7.
