A large group of Tshwane taxi drivers say they will strike because they are being prevented from obtaining licences and professional driving permits.

Spokesperson and taxi driver Thato Nkadimeng says: "Aarto is blocking us from getting licences and PDPs."

He says drivers have been slapped with enforcement ticket fines.

Nkadimeng says drivers have met with the authorities who have agreed to reduce their fines by 60%.

He says the notice received suggests taxi drivers will gather at the Denneboom taxi rank in Mamelodi from 03:00 on Wednesday.

It is understood the drivers will then proceed to Tshwane House in the Pretoria CBD to hand over a memorandum.

TMPD says these roads will possibly be affected:

o Tsamaya Road

o Stormvoel Road

o Nico Smith Street

o Steve Biko Street

o Flower Street

o Eskia Mphahlele Drive

o Struben Street

o Thabo Sehume

o Madiba Street

o Lilian Ngoyi

Mahamba says TMPD officers will be deployed to areas which may be affected by the strike action.

Gauteng police say they are aware of the intended strike, but have declined to comment at this stage.

Transport officials were not immediately available for comment.
