Taxi operations resume in Ekurhuleni
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The National Taxi Alliance (NTA) has confirmed that taxi services have resumed in the Ekurhuleni region on Friday morning.
This follows after the NTA threatened to shut down all taxi operations following the government's decision to award an operating licence to a private bus company on the routes normally operated by taxis.
The Alliance wants a 30% stake in the bus company, which operates in Ekurhuleni.
Commuters in Germiston, Katlehong, Tembisa and other areas of the East Rand were left stranded on Thursday after taxi drivers embarked on a strike.
On Friday morning, the NTA said although taxis are back on the roads, engagements with government are still ongoing.
"Taxi's are in full swing in the Ekurhuleni area, this is after talks were held into late last night (Thursday) with the MEC for Transport (Kedibone Diale) and all those affected and the resolution was that the operations should resume and not inconvenience people as negotiations will be on an ongoing basis to eventually get to an amicable conclusion," said NTA spokesperson Theo Malele.
