Tshwane taxi drivers have embarked on a strike in protest of enforcement fines.

Commuters and motorists have been advised to use alternate routes as several major roads have been blocked this morning.

The Tshwane Metro Police Department's (TMPD) Isaac Mahamba says routes in Soshanguve and Mamelodi have been affected by the strike.

"In Mamelodi,  Solomon Mahlangu and Hector Pieterson roads have been blocked. Motorists are encouraged to use alternatives."

Mahamba also says the Mabopane Highway and other routes have been blockaded with burning objects.

"Ruth First, the M17 and the Mabopane Highways have been blocked off," Mahamba adds.

TMPD says they are doing all they can to clear the routes as quickly as possible.

The Tshwane MMC for Roads and Transport Sheila Senkubuge says the city does not condone the strike.

She says that the taxi strike has not been approved.

Tswhane taxi drivers are striking because they want all of their fines scrapped.

However, the city is only offering to scrap 60% of a driver's fines.

Meanwhile, train services have also been disrupted.

Metrorail has suspended services between Mabopane and Soshanguve.
