This comes a few weeks after three alleged taxi owners were shot and killed in Mabopane, north of Tshwane, last week.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Mavela Masondo, says police received information about armed suspects threatening taxi operators around the Mamelodi area.

Masondo says acting on a tip-off, a suspicious-looking grey Mercedes Benz without number plates and a silver Toyota Corolla were spotted and searched.

"Upon searching the vehicles and occupants, police recovered four firearms which include rifles and handguns, fully loaded with ammunition. Four suspects were arrested and charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition," says Masondo.

He adds police believe these suspects may be linked to other incidents of taxi violence in the province.

"Firearms will be taken for ballistic tests to establish if they have not been used in the commission of crimes," concludes Masondo.
