Teachers not convinced about mandatory Covid jabs - SAOU

The South African Teachers Union (SAOU) says teachers are not convinced they need to be compelled to be vaccinated against Covid-19.

The union’s Chris Klopper says this follows a survey done by the union to see if there was a change of heart in the past 6 months.

“We conducted the initial survey about 6 months ago when we started with the vaccination program and we thought that in light of the debate that is currently ensuing in the various sectors on the pros and cons in regards to mandatory vaccinations, that there would be a change of heart amongst our members,” says Klopper.

“The reality is that teachers are on a 50-50 basis where some are in favour of mandatory vaccination while the other 50% believe that it should still be conducted on a voluntary basis.”

With many institutions of higher learning adopting mandatory vaccine policies, teachers are beginning to feel the pressure that some high school or primary schools may be next.

Klopper however explains that the union wants it to still be on a voluntary basis.

“Our proposal when we enter these debates is firstly (vaccinations must) still be conducted on a voluntary basis but very importantly, we must emphasise to the state that they must advocate more clearly about the advantages of the vaccinations,” he says.

He adds that the Constitutional Court should be brought in to decide on the matter sooner rather than later to avoid conflict.

“The current uncertainty around this matter is creating unnecessary conflict and polarisation,” says Klopper.
