Telkom auction an attack on the state, claims union

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) says the decision by the telecommunications service provider Telkom to auction some 53 properties is an "attack on the state".
Telkom has announced that it plans to auction off the properties in the middle of March.

The cash-strapped entity has also informed unions that it is looking at the possibility of retrenching some 3000 people.
CWU general-secretary Aubrey Tshabalala claims some of the properties that will be auctioned are used by the South African Post Office.
"The move by Telkom to auction off 53 properties include vacant land and commercial buildings and we reject that completely cause it shows that the management of Telkom relies largely on what we call an artificial profit.
"They have run out of innovations and they have run out of how they will entrench business in the new digital world," says Tshabalala.
He adds that the union is awaiting a Labour Court ruling on the retrenchments.
