Thousands descend on Durban for July

All roads will lead to Durban's Greyville Racecourse today where the first full capacity in-person Durban July will take place since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country.

Around 35 000 people are expected to attend this year's horse racing event.


The municipality says those in attendance are expected to spend R145 million, with the Gross Domestic Product in economic activity projected to be R362 million. 


Roads that will be closed to traffic are Avondale Road, DLI Avenue, Mitchell Crescent, 5th and 6th Avenue, and Clarence Road.


Gold Circles Racing's Stephen Marshall addressed members of the media at a press briefing on the event earlier this week.


"As event organisers, we had to think outside the box for 2020 and 2021 events with virtual parties to try and appeal entertainment pillar of this event. This year we are supporting the Durban Tourism initiative at various satellites around Durban.


"We are looking into taking Hollywood Bets and Durban July into the townships."
