Thousands expected to flock to Durban beaches for New Years

eThekwini Municipality says it's bracing for a bumper New Year - if the stats from Christmas are anything to go by.

Holiday festivities saw between 100 000 and 300 000 people flock to Durban's beaches over the Christmas long-weekend. 


At the moment, the occupancy rate at hotels is 95% - with officials saying more bookings are expected this weekend. 


The municipality has cautioned beach-goers and visitors to abide by the rules during their celebrations.

A lifeguard at La Mercy Beach had to be treated this week - after he was injured during an altercation with a group of around 30-people.

Officials say he was trying to redirect them to a safe bathing area when a row broke out.  


More than 150 rescues were carried out - also over the Christmas weekend.
