Mpumalanga police have arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of a German tourist near the Kruger National Park's Numbi Gate.
The first suspect arrested in the case, Napoleon Joseph Nyalunga (35), made his second appearance before the Kabokweni Magistrate’s Court earlier this month.
Nyalungu was arrested after German tourist Jörg Schnarr was shot and killed during a botched hijacking in October.
The 67-year-old man, his wife, and two friends were attacked on the notorious Numbi road near the Kruger National Park during a tourist visit to South Africa.
Schnarr died when the suspects fired several shots through the window of their car after he refused to unlock the doors.
The trio were arrested during a crime intelligence operation in the province on Wednesday and Thursday.
"One was cornered at a certain retail store in Nelspruit whilst two were nabbed at Badplaas and Elukwatini respectively between Wednesday, 16 November 2022 and Thursday, 17 November 2022,” says police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala.
"One of the two suspects was allegedly found in possession of a white Toyota Tazz believed to have been used during the brutal murder of the German tourist. A firearm with its serial numbers filled off was recovered during the arrest as well as about eleven live ammunition and some jamming devices found in his possession.
"Meanwhile the third suspect is believed to be working together with the other two. All three are suspected to be involved in multiple house robberies around Gert Sibande District. They are expected to appear in court soon.”
