Gauteng police are investigating an incident where three suspected hijackers in Soweto were allegedly shot by a motorist.
The motorist apparently opened fire during an attempted hijacking at the Diepkloof interchange on Tuesday morning.
Gauteng police say the motorist was reportedly stopped by the suspects, who pretended to be police officers and subsequently attempted to hijack the car.
The motorist then allegedly pulled out his firearm.
"It is alleged that a man was driving on the highway when occupants of two different vehicles signalled him to stop and showed him what looked like a police appointment certificate," said police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.
"When he stopped, three males from the red Kia Rio vehicle approached and told him there was something wrong under his car, and when he bent to check, he was pointed with a knife and instructed not to move as they wanted his car and not him
"The suspects from another vehicle also shot back while driving off. Three suspects were declared dead on the scene.”
Police are investigating a case of murder, attempted murder and attempted hijacking.
