Thwala disputes identifying gun in Meyiwa shooting

State witness Mthokozisi Thwala has denied claims that he told the police’s identikit specialist that he managed to identify the weapon used to shoot dead football star Senzo Meyiwa.

Thwala remained under cross-examination in the High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday. Five men are on trial for killing the former Bafana Bafana captain in Vosloorus in 2014.

He was one of six people in the house on the day Meyiwa was killed.

Defence counsel for accused three, Advocate Charles Mnisi, pushed Thwala on the remarks he made to identikit specialist Amanda Steenkamp a few years after Meyiwa’s death.

Mnisi told the court that Thwala told Steenkamp that the weapon carried by the first suspect “resembled an old revolver”.

But Thwala denied ever identifying the gun.

“You also told Mrs Steenkamp that this person had a weapon which you identify as an old revolver,” questioned Mnisi.

“Yes I hear you although I can’t remember well but yes,” responded Thwala.

“Is there a possibility that you can’t remember but you might have told her but have forgotten?

“There is also a possibility that I didn’t say it nor mention it but she wrote it.”

“So you didn’t say?,” probed Mnisi

“I never said it,” responded Thwala.

During his earlier testimony, Thwala could not identify nor describe the gun that was in the possession of the first suspect.

He will continue with his cross-examination on Thursday.
