UDM wants NPA boss Batohi removed over Nulane, Gupta debacles

United Democratic Movement (UDM) leader Bantu Holomisa says NPA head Shamila Batohi must be removed from office for failing to successfully prosecute state capture culprits.

The party has written to President Cyril Ramaphosa requesting for a commission of inquiry into Batohi’s fitness to hold office.

Holomisa says failure to prosecute is undermining the work done by the commission of inquiry into state capture, which unearthed grand corruption in the state institutions and the government.

"The UDM has been questing the fitness of Batohi from time immemorial, she responded that she was out of funds to appoint competent people in her department, parliament gave her the money and she appointed people but we don't see progress,” Holomisa says.

"It actually undermines the effort of the Zondo Commission on state capture, we have wasted a lot of billions there trying to get to the bottom of this corruption and she is not charging anybody.

The NPA has come under fire for its failure to extradite the corruption-accused Gupta brothers from the UAE and the acquittal of the accused in the Nulane Investment case last month.

Despite the recent arrests of the accused in Bosasa, Transnet, Eskom, and Estina dairy farm scandal, Holomisa says the arrests mean nothing without convictions.

"The arrests mean nothing, that is the job of the police to arrest people. How many people have been arrested and they are not appearing in court? We are talking about convictions here, people who have appeared in court and the case is finished.

"Batohi is an accounting officer of the NPA, therefore we have a right to ask that she be assessed in terms of the laws of the country. Let the inquiry be considered because we are arguing that she is losing serious cases now," said Holomisa.
