Parliament’s tourism committee has welcomed the establishment of a coronavirus relief fund to assist the ailing sector.
The Department of Tourism has made some R200 million available to help small and medium enterprises deal with the drop in tourists due to Covid-19.
In a bid to mitigate the impact of coronavirus on the tourism sector, the department has urged eligible businesses to apply for funding.
The tourism committee’s chair Supra Mahumapelo says the department also needs to ensure it assists businesses operating in the villages, townships and small towns
"This intervention to mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 on the tourism sector as a once-off capped grant assistance to small, micro, and medium-size enterprises to ensure sustainability during the crisis is welcomed, and these funds will ensure that these businesses survive beyond the Covid-19 pandemic.”
He also urged all South Africans to play their part in curbing the pandemic.
