Robben Island, where former president Nelson Mandela spent 18 years in prison, is one of the country's most popular tourism spots.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Sisulu says that she'd like to invite the ANC to host its lekgotla at the "house of horrors".

“I think what people of the religious order do, they go for a religious retreat to engage with their inner self. I would  like to invite the ANC here for a Lekgotla to engage with exactly what has happened in this country.

"Right from the time of slavery when little children were kidnapped to come and work in this place. It is just a house of horrors and we should have it at the back of our minds with every decision we take with every step we take. Because we did not just drop like a man jumping from a balloon. We come with our history, our history should be the bedrock of every decision that we take as the ANC."

Last month a photo did the rounds on social media, showing what many believed to be the heritage site in a state of decay.

However, the site has denied any reports of infrastructural collapse.
