#TrainCrash: Minister called to act urgently

Several people were injured in the latest train crash in Gauteng on Thursday evening.

A train collided with a faulty, stationary train at the Van Riebeeckpark Station.


More than 320 commuters were injured.


32 people were transported to various hospitals, with three still receiving treatment on Friday morning. 


This latest incident has led to mounting calls for Transport Minister, Blade Nzimande to suspend all Metrorail train services.

Its embattled operator, Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), has also come under fire following concerns that its services are life threatening.


"The two trains collided from the rear end which was faulty and stationery at Van Riebeeckpark Station," says Metrorail spoklesperson, Lillian Mofokeng.


Last week, Prasa had to suspend all its train services in KwaZulu-Natal after violent protests over crime incidents on trains.

In early September, 35 commuters were injured after two passenger trains from Metro Rail collided in Selby, south of Johannesburg.


Union, the United National Transport Union has called on Nzimande to suspend all services of Metrorail.


"Passenger trains are death trains and that the situation is life threatening," says union spokesperson, Sonja Carstens.


Carstens says they will approach the court with an urgent interdict to compel Prasa to suspend its services.
