Transport minister condemns blocking of highways

Transport minister Dipuo Peters has condemned the illegal blocking of several arterial routes by metered taxi drivers this morning.
Metered taxi drivers, who want ride sharing taxi service Uber to be banned from operating in Gauteng, caused chaos on the R21, R24 and the N12 highways.
Transport spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi says it is unfortunate some metered taxi operators resorted to anarchy.
He confirms the department is in the process of responding to drivers' memorandum in consultation with the leadership of the metered taxi associations and relevant provincial authorities.
"The department is committed to a speedy resolution of the matter as contained in the memorandum, however the department will not tolerate acts of lawlessness as demonstrated by some metered taxi operators."
Minister Peters applauds the swift response by the Gauteng Traffic Police supported by other law enforcement agencies who cleared the affected roads and ensured that motorist are safe.
"Minister Peters would like to apologise for the inconveniences that might has been caused to motorists as a result of this protest and thank all motorist for their patience, understanding and cooperation," Mnisi adds.
Meanwhile, Uber has invited metered taxi drivers to make use of its technology.
