Tremor hits North West

The Council for Geoscience (CGS) has confirmed that a tremor has struck near Klerksdorp in North West.

According to the Council's Dr. Eldridge Kgaswane, the tremor occurred in the Klerksdorp area with residents from Orkney and Potchefstroom also feeling it.

 

"This tremor originated in the Klerksdorp gold mine region and it struck shortly after 5am this morning. At least 47 stations of our network recorded the quake."

 

Kgaswane says that the tremor was also felt in parts of Johannesburg, Krugersdorp and parts of Westonaria.

He says they are still waiting for more information to confirm the magnitude, amid claims that the tremor measured 5.2 on the Richter scale.

 

Meanwhile, the North West disaster management centre says they also received reports from various parts of the province.

 

Disaster management spokesperson Ben Bole says they are still in the process of gathering information on the earthquake.

 

"In due course, we will issue a media statement to share with the public the extent of the tremor," he says.
