Meyiwa trial hears of ‘instruction’ to destroy gun found on accused

A new witness in the Senzo Meyiwa trial has told the High Court in Pretoria of an instruction to destroy a firearm found in possession of accused number three.
The instruction was given to him while still stationed at Cleveland Police Station in Johannesburg in 2015.
But the firearm was never destroyed.
Captain Blessing Mtshali was employed as a commander of the SAP13 from January to October 2022 to guard exhibits.
Part of his duties at the time was to ensure there was no tampering or losing of evidence.
Mtshali told the court that the instruction came from a senior police officer that the gun found on accused number three, Mthobisi Mncube, be destroyed by the state.
"On the 10th of November 2017, there was an instruction as indicated earlier that the items should be confiscated by the state for destruction."

"Who gave the instruction?” state prosecutor Advocate George Baloyi asked.
"That instruction was given by a branch commander Lt Col Mathakgale," he responded.
mncube was arrested near his home in Malvern in February 2015.
When police searched his place of residence, they discovered an unlicensed 9mm firearm and live ammunition of varying calibre.
Mncube was subsequently convicted for the murder of a taxi association chairperson in Alexandra in 2016.
