Tshwane council set to decide Mokgalapa’s fate
Updated | By Lulutho Mkosi
The Tshwane council is expected to vote on motions of no confidence in Mayor Stevens Mokgalapa and council speaker Katlego Mathebe.

The African National Congress (ANC) and the Economic Freedom Fighters petitioned for a special council meeting to remove the mayor, speakers and MMC’s.
The council is set to convene on Thursday.
Mokgalapa hit headlines last year after a leaked audio recording of him and Transport MMC Sheila Senkubuge came to light.
The mayor has since been put on special leave by his party the Democratic Alliance (DA).

DA Gauteng leader John Moodey says he is nevertheless confident that Mokgalapa will remain mayor of the city after the council meeting.
“We do expect that there will be a motion of no confidence brought against the mayor and the speaker.
“We are fully aware of the fact that the ANC is trying by all means to make sure they regain the governance of Tshwane, but as the DA we will contest and oppose such notions.”
At the same time the ANC’s Tshwane chairperson Kgosi Maepa says he is confident that they have enough votes to remove the mayor and speaker from office.
