Tshwane to install cameras at intersections amid spike in theft, vandalism
Updated | By Mapaballo Borotho
The City of Tshwane will put measures in place to curb what it says is a sharp increase in the number of traffic lights being vandalised across the metro.
The city says the incidents have led to many intersections operating without traffic signals, leading to increased congestion and crashes.
Spokesperson Selby Bokaba the city is in the process of installing security cameras and will also increase the number of patrols in high-risk areas.
"The city has also noticed an increased vandalism of traffic signals along provincial routes, which is the responsibility of the contractor appointed by the Gauteng Provincial Department of Roads & Transport to maintain and repair".
“Theft and vandalism of traffic lights is a serious problem that is putting the residents at risk. The city is working to repair damaged traffic lights as quickly as possible, but these crimes are having a significant impact on traffic flow and the safety of both motorists and pedestrians alike.
“The problems are also compounded by intermittent power outages due to several reasons, including load shedding, which is out of the city’s control,” Bokaba added.
