Heavy rain is expected over Gauteng, the western Mpumalanga Highveld, the Western Bushveld of Limpopo, the North West and parts of the Free State till late Monday afternoon.

Tshwane EMS spokesperson, Charles Mabaso has warned motorists to be vigilant on the roads.

“Following rain that has been persistent from Sunday, the South African Weather Service has further issued a level 4 warning for disruptive rain which would persist from the early hours of Monday through most of the day.

As such, we would like to call upon motorists, especially in the hours of the morning to be cognisant of the wet road conditions and make necessary arrangements to travel timeously and make sure that on the road, they keep a safe following distance,” says Mabaso.

He says no major incidents have been reported but the emergency services continue to monitor areas with bridges.

“We are monitoring low water bridges around Tshwane that are known to be susceptible to flooding and as such, we call on motorists to be vigilant and not cross any flooded low water bridge. Rather find an alternative route.

The emergency service will monitor the situation and remain on high alert for any eventualities,” adds Mabaso.

In Johannesburg, Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says no major incidents have been reported overnight.

“We still encourage all our motorists to exercise caution when driving, as most roads are wet and slippery and also extend the safe following distance and avoid areas that are flooded and our residents in our low-lying areas to avoid crossing bridges.

We have our water rescue unit on high alert and also all our 30 fire stations are fully operational, so we should be able to respond to any emergencies that might occur throughout the city,” says Mulaudzi.
