Tshwane political instability adding to service delivery woes - analyst
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
A political analyst has warned that the ongoing political instability in Tshwane will only lead to a further deterioration in service delivery.
The city has been without political leadership since the DA’s Randall Williams resigned in mid-February.
In a surprising turn of events on Tuesday evening, the Congress of the People’s Murunwa Makwarela was elected as Tshwane Mayor.
He was able to beat the DA’s Cilliers Brink due to support from the ANC and EFF, as well as votes from within the DA-led coalition.
Political analyst Goodenough Mashego says it would be naïve to think the political instability has no impact service delivery in the cash-strapped city.
“We see lack of service delivery in all areas experiencing political instability, which leads to syndicates operating the municipalities and contractors fear going into those areas to provide services”.
Mashego says the water shortage in Tshwane is a result of continuous political instability.
Mashego says smaller parties can be the saving grace for South Africa as long as “they see themselves as governing and not partnering the ANC”.
He believes the coalition partnerships which have formed are a trial run for the national elections in 2024 to see which parties can govern together smoothly.
