Maponya was found guilty of 101 counts of rape and robbery with aggravating circumstances at the High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday.

He’s accused of raping and robbing dozens women across Tshwane suburbs, including Silverton, Nellmapius, Atteridgeville, Mamelodi and Olievenhoutbosch over a period of five years.

His youngest victim was a 14-year-old girl.

He returned to the dock on Thursday for sentencing.

The judge sentenced Maponya to life terms for raping his teenage victim and three other women who he raped multiple times.

Mosopa also sentenced Maponya to 15 years each for the other 31 rapes he committed, 15 years for every count of housebreaking with the intent to rob and robbery, as well as 15 years for every count of housebreaking with the intent to steal.

Mosopa added none of the sentences would run concurrently.

Judge Papi Mosopa told Maponya he hoped his harsh sentence would serve as a deterrent for other perpetrators.

“You are not the type of person who is willing to live side by side with others in peace. You are hell bent on encroaching on the dignity of others," Mosopa said.
