Tshwane settles its R800m Eskom debt
Updated | By Mmangaliso Khumalo
The City of Tshwane has officially settled its R878 million debt to cash-strapped Eskom.
The payment to the power utility comes after Eskom called the municipality out earlier in the week for what it called “erratic payments”.
Eskom had rejected the city’s offer to enter into a settlement plan for the R878 million it owed, saying it is the only one of the country’s metro’s who fail to settle their bill on time.
The metro only managed a payment of R10 million on 23 June and R20 million on 30 June.
But the city's spokesperson Selby Bokaba said on Thursday that Tshwane has made a full payment to the utility.
"I can confirm that we have made a full payment to Eskom of R876 million, although they say that what we owed them was R878 million. What we paid was the actual consumption which was R876 million. The outstanding amount is not the consumption but the interest that they levied on the debt.
"That is something that we will settle either tomorrow or the latest on Monday.”
We can confirm that we paid @Eskom_SA an ammount of R876,296,947.97 today at 10:24:08. We hope that the power utility will provide the people of @CityTshwane with constant and reliable power supply.

We understand our responsibility and we are committed to paying what we owe. Now our clients must also do the same & pay their municipal accounts or we disconnect services. It’s that simple. #TshwaneYaTima https://t.co/elkGAlkduL
