Tshwane vows buses will be back on roads despite violence

Tshwane’s MMC for Roads and Transport Katlego Mathebe has urged law enforcement agencies to step up efforts to protect the city from vandalism.

On Friday, the city confirmed that two of its buses were pelted with rocks and other projectiles while heading to one of the depots.

The latest incident comes as the capital city continues to struggle to find a solution to the unprotected strike by some workers affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu).

The two-month labour dispute is linked to the non-payment of salary increases by the city.

Mathebe said the city will ensure the buses are back on the road.

“It is unacceptable that commuters continue to experience disruption of bus services due to criminal elements. Many residents rely on the city’s transport service to reach their places of work, school and other important destinations," she said.

She says the city will do a full assessment and follow up the matter with the police for further investigations.

"I would also like to call on the various levels of SAPS and Crime Intelligence to intensify efforts to maintain law and order in the capital city.”
