TUT increases security amid disruptions

The Tshwane University of Technology has intensified security at its campuses after students disrupted academic activities on Monday.

Students demand justice for the 26-year old student who died while en-route to the hospital 12 days ago. 


The institution vowed that academic activities will resume on Tuesday after several lectures and a Senate meeting was disrupted by students.


Security has been tightened to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Violence erupted at the institution's Soshanguve campus over claims that their SRC elections were rigged, resulting in a shooting which killed a 26-year-old law student.


Police watchdog, Ipid, is investigating the circumstances, with allegations that police had used live ammunition to calm students.


"Activities will continue tomorrow to ensure no  academic time is lost," says spokesperson, Willa de Ruyter. 


SNG Grant Thornton has been appointed to independently investigate the claims that the SRC elections were rigged.

The probe is expected to be completed in the next few weeks.
