Two in court for R8-million VAT fraud
Updated | By ANA
Two men were expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate on Friday facing allegations that they defrauded the South African Revenue Service (SARS) of almost R8 million.
SARS spokesperson Sandile Memela said the pair were apprehended by members of the South African Police Service on Wednesday.
Memela said the police and SARS enforcement officials found 15 computers and passports in the building, where the pair were picked up.
“The men were busted following intensive investigations that indicated the accused with 15 other individuals and entities committed fraud by misrepresentation. They allegedly submitted 105 VAT returns of at least 19 entities with false statements to claim refunds,” said Memela.
Memela said both suspects were not employees of SARS. - ANA
