Major Thulani Zwane said Mbeko Duma, 29 and Mxolisi Bhani, 27, appeared in court on Thursday and face murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition charges.

“They were remanded in custody until 20 September 2015 for further investigation,” said Zwane.

Duma and Bhani were arrested on June 11 in connection with the murder of taxi owner 52-year-old Vele Ndebele in Lamontville, south of Durban.

Ndebele was outside the Lamontville Community Hall I June when unknown suspects jumped out of the black Kia Picanto and opened fire, fatally wounding him at around 10am.

“He sustained several gunshot wounds and died instantly. The suspects left the vehicle behind and fled the scene on foot,” Zwane said at the time.

He said that the two men were found in possession of four unlicensed firearms including two revolvers, two pistol and ammunitions. -ANA
