Two more SANDF soldiers die in DRC shooting
Updated | By Cliff Shiko
The South African National Defence Force (Sandf) has confirmed two of its soldiers have died in a shooting incident, thought to be a murder suicide, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Sandf says one of the soldiers took a service firearm and shot dead his colleague before turning the gun himself.
Over 3 000 Sandf soldiers have been deployed to the war-torn country, as part of the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission (MONUSCO).
Last month, two soldiers were killed in a mortar bomb attack and in a separate incident two more soldiers were injured when an Oryx helicopter came under fire while evacuating a causality from Rwindi to Goma.
An investigation is now underway.
"The SANDF has convened a Board of Inquiry to work with the MONUSCO command to probe the incident and the circumstances that led to it." SANDF spokesperson Selinah Rawlins
"Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Thandi Modise has expressed shock at the incident.
"The members' remains will be repatriated to South Africa in due course. All families have been informed of the unfortunate incident." she added
