Mpumalanga police have arrested two of their own for illegally possessing firearms, ammunition and explosives.
The two suspects, attached to the White River flying squad, were arrested for allegedly transporting the weapons from Schoemansdal to Kanyamazane on Thursday evening.
Police spokesperson Selvy Mohlala says the suspects, who had been travelling in a state vehicle, had to be shot at by the police before it came to a halt.
Mohlala says six rifles, two pistols, a bag of explosives, an explosives cable and a battery were recovered in Kaalrug near Malelane.
"A constable was immediately arrested whilst the other two disappeared in the darkness. Another one, a sergeant, was arrested this morning, hiding in a farrow next to the road.
"The third suspect is still at large, and police are continuing their investigation. More charges may possibly be added."
The two suspects are expected to appear in the Malelane Periodical Court on Monday.
