Analysts pour cold water on multiparty coalition’s governance aims

Political analyst Theo Venter doesn’t believe the newly formed Multiparty Charter for South Africa will be able to garner enough votes for an outright majority during the 2024 elections.

The group on Thursday agreed to form a coalition ahead of the 2024 elections in an attempt to unseat the ANC during the polls.

The parties include the DA, IFP, Freedom Front Plus, ActionSA, Independent South African National Civic Organisation, United Independent Movement, and Spectrum National Party.

Venter said the ANC is still more likely to reach the required number of votes for a majority in parliament.

"I think it's possible for them to reach in the high 30s, or even 40%. I think the value of this newly formed coalition is challenging for at least two provincial situations, which may Include KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng and maybe the Northen Cape. But I think the ANC will have a much easier time to reach 50 than what this coalition can do.”

Meanwhile, fellow political analyst Levy Ndou said the coalition will need to invite more opposition parties to join if they want to take over national government.

"Elections are about numbers. If they cannot be able to get sufficient support from other political parties, they might not be able to run South Africa.”
