The Johannesburg metro police have arrested two men for possession of stolen copper in Bramley, north of Johannesburg.
The suspects were arrested at a house on Saturday.
Metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the suspects were found with a large amount of copper, the origins of which they could not explain.
“An unknown male opened the gate of the premises, officers approached him, identified themselves as police and proceeded to search inside the premises. Whilst searching, they found another male inside the premises and discovered huge quantities of copper cut up into pieces.
“When questioned, the two males failed to give a valid explanation on how they acquired the copper and were immediately arrested.”
He says the suspects attempted to offer the officers a R10 000 bribe.
It was subsequently confirmed that the copper belongs to Transnet and passenger rail agency Prasa.
The two suspects are expected to appear in court on Monday.
