Two Sun City escapees shot and killed

The two male suspects were part of a group of sixteen awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from Johannesburg Correctional Centre on Monday.

Hawks spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo says the suspects were killed during a shoot-out with police near Greytown in KwaZulu-Natal. 

 

"The suspects were spotted on the R33 near Greytown where police tried to stop them. But the suspects stopped and fired shots at the police who returned fire in self-defence, fatally wounding the two suspects."

 

Police confiscated a  9mm pistol as well as a toy gun.

"We cannot divulge the names of the suspects at this stage as they are not identified by their next of kin or family members," says Mhlongo. 

 

The sixteen suspects escaped from the Sun City prison after they broke through a window, barricades and a wall in the early hours of the morning. 

 

The suspects are facing various charges including murder, rape and house robbery.


The search for the other fourteen suspects continues.
