Two Upington cops jailed for R200 Covid permit bribe

Two police officers have been sentenced to two years in prison for corruption during the Covid-19 lockdown in Upington.
Sergeant Stanley Beukes (37) and 26-year-old Constable Thapelo Semamai solicited a R200 bribe from an elderly woman who was driving without a travel permit at the height of the COVID-19 restrictions in April 2021.
The senior citizen did not have the permit, and officials demanded the gratification in return for her to be issued with a permit.
Northern Cape Hawks spokesperson Tebogo Thebe says the pensioner paid the R200 bribe and thereafter went straight to the Upington police station to open a case of corruption.
"The Upington-based Hawk's Serious Organised Crime Investigation team successfully investigated the matter resulting in the conviction of the accused.
The employer, South African Police Services, subjected both employees to an internal disciplinary process with the outcome being a dismissal of both officers. The court sentenced the duo to effective 24 months imprisonment." he said.
