Tygerberg campus will become the first non-smoking and tobacco-free campus in the country.

Stellenbosch University's Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Professor, Jimmy Volmink, says this initiative is aimed at enhancing health and equality at the faculty.

"From the first of January 2019, no smoking or the use of any tobacco products will not be allowed anywhere at the Tygerberg campus," says Volmink.

He adds that the list also include the use of e-cigarettes, hookah pipes, and smokeless tobacco products.

"By making the campus a smoke and tobacco-free space, we are creating a healthy and safe space for everybody."

Volmink says the use and exposure to tobacco is a substantial public health concern.

"It is a risk factor for some of the leading causes of deaths, including cancer and stroke."
