UJ: Online registration going well

The registration of new and returning students at the University of Johannesburg was on track, the institution said on Thursday.

“By early afternoon on Wednesday, we had registered over 13000 students, which is more than one quarter of our entire student body and in line with the pace of registration in previous years,” deputy vice chancellor for strategic services, Mpho Letlape, said in a statement.

“This is a particularly significant number when one remembers that for many parents who are responsible for their children’s first fee instalment, payday is still a week away. It confirms that for students, parents, and communities, education is the most important route to empowerment and that students and parents are keen for learning and teaching to get under way smoothly.”

Letlape added that more than 25 percent of students had completed the necessary formalities and paid their initial fee instalment in the ten days since the process started.

The mainly online registration would remain open until February 3, and is accessible through the institution’s website.

The institution said up to 10,000 students would be able to access a combination of National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NFSAS) grants, UJ top up loan funding and externally sourced funds this year.

“A second group of up to 5,000 financially needy students will receive support exclusively through the Student Representative Council Trust Fund to pay their first fee instalments. Information on how to access support from the SRC Trust Fund is available from the university’s call centre,” said UJ.

The university introduced online applications and a toll-free number for people wanting to apply for admission after a stampede in 2014, where a mother of a prospective student died and 20 people were injured at the university during its application process.
