The quality assurance body says apart from a maths paper which leaked, as well as a limited number of groups copying each others' work, it is satisfied the exams were valid, fair and credible.

Speaking during a media briefing at the Umalusi Building, chairperson John Volmink said the body's decisions are all open to scrutiny.

"After moderating the 58 subjects raw marks were accepted for 26 subjects, while upward shifts were done for 28 of the subjects and downward shifts towards the average historical leaner performance profile were affected on the remaining 4 subjects, " he said.

Volmink said home languages didn't show the progress that they had hoped for, while overall learner performance improved.

"Marks for Physical Science were not adjusted in any way, neither was History, English, African languages and Afrikaans," he said

The Department of Basic Education will release the outcome of the exams on the 4th of January 2017 and the results will be released on the 5th January.

Volmink also warned that action will be taken against learners who were involved in the group copying of the leaked Maths 2 paper.

"We want swift action to be taken against those learners and any other person involved in leaking of exam papers," he said.

He did however concede that there is no need for a re-write of the paper.

"The leak is said have affected no more than 100 learners, according to an investigation by the Hawks, SAPS and the Department of Basic Education," he added.
