Umalusi cautions against ‘mushrooming’ of bogus institutions
Updated | By Princess Mahogo
Education quality assurance body Umalusi has warned of increased bogus online schools and websites selling fake certificates.
It says the unaccredited institutions make use of fake certificates, emails and letters bearing the Umalusi logo to admit students into non-existing programmes.
Umalusi’s Biki Lepota says they are working with the police in an effort to clamp down on these institutions.
“Umalusi learnt at the beginning of the month of June through its whistle-blower line of the bogus institutions using Umalusi logo. Upon receipt of the complaints, we then investigated and found that the institutions are in KwaZulu-Natal. We then checked our website and found that these institutions are not registered”.
Lepota has urged the public to visit the Umalusi website to verify an institution's accreditation status before signing up or making any payments.
“The most important thing for the members of the public is to visit the Umalusi website and go to the accredited institution icon and search for the name of the institution. If it does not show on the website, that should tell them that it is a bogus institution”.
Lepota says no arrests have been made.
