The Information Communications and Technology Union (ICTU) alleges that MultiChoice is planning on entrenching almost 3000 workers.

ICTU spokesperson, Thabang Mothelo says the media giant called a meeting on Friday to inform them about the decision they have taken.

Mothelo says 2184 employees are affected.

"MultiChoice says it is the business rationale because digital platforms they have created and self-service they have created and customers are choosing not to use the walk-in centres and voice calls centre,” said Mothelo.

He insists though: "Their rationale is flawed in the sense that MultiChoice has opened new centres in Polokwane, Bloemfontein, and Cape Town and as a result, MultiChoice cannot argue that they are retrenching on a basis of the people who are not using the walk-in centres any longer."

Mothelo says they have not been consulted about the retrenchments, which is against the law.

He adds that the union will be meeting with its members on Saturday to decide on the way forward.

"We do not want to use a gung-ho approach of just quickly rushing to the courts, but that will be the only remedy that is available," said Mothelo.

MultiChoice could not immediately be reached for comment.
