Union Bemawu heads to Labour Court to halt SABC retrenchments

The Broadcasting Electronic Media and Allied Workers Union (Bemawu) says it will be heading to the Labour Court in an attempt to halt the plan by the SABC to retrenchment permanent staff.

Bemawu President Hannes du Buisson says they have instructed their legal team to serve the documents on the SABC. 

“We are now proceeding with an urgent application against the SABC that is in draft at this point in time. We hope to serve that application to the SABC either today or tomorrow during the day and be in court as soon as possible.

“We will ask the court to order the SABC to return to the consultation process and to not issue any termination letter to SABC employees until the consultation process has been completed.” 

 

At least 600 SABC employees could lose their jobs as part of the plan by the SABC to cut costs.
