Students at the University of the Western Cape have called for a boycott of the midyear exams.
UWC spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo says a group of students, going under the banner of UWC Fees Will Fall, disrupted exams on Monday.
"A number of examinations where disrupted yesterday. The group which calls itself UWC Fees Will Fall are saying they will disrupt more exams and are calling for an exam boycott. The majority of exams did continue yesterday and we beefed up security today to ensure there has been no disruptions," says Tyhalibongo.
On its Facebook page, UWC Fees will Fall says the proposed boycott is as a result of management being unable to address their grievances.
Tyhalibongo says the students have not formally engaged the University about the proposed boycott.
"We have seen a few pamphlets on campus and posts on social media regarding the reasons for the boycott, but we have not had any formal communication with the protesting group. We are engaging with the SRC to find out if they are involved in the boycott and if they would like to engage management on the issues.”
Tyhalibongo says the exact nature of their grievance is unclear, but involved student funding scheme NSFAS and the dismissal of contract workers. unclear what the students are complaining about with regards to the centralisation of NSFAS.
According to UWC Fees Will Fall, two students were injured during protests on campus.
