He's accused of killing his parents and older brother with an axe at their luxury golf estate home in Stellenbosch in 2015.

Van Breda's sister, Marli, survived the attack, but sustained severe head wounds.

Due to her amnesia, she cannot recall the details of the attack, but is said to be a State witness.

Before the trial kicks off, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says High Court Judge Siraj Desai will from 10.00am hand down judgement in Media24's application to live stream proceedings.

Media24 brought this application last week, but Van Breda's legal team is opposing it.

The NPA has also argued having cameras in court will place unnecessary pressure on witnesses.

Van Breda is facing three counts of murder, one of attempted murder and one of obstructing the course of justice.

The 22 year-old, who handed himself over to police in June last year, is currently out on R100 000 bail.

It is alleged that, at the time of the murders, Van Breda inflicted injuries on himself and tampered with the crime scene.

It is understood that DNA evidence and how it was processed may play a big role in this trial.

In September last year, Van Breda had another run in with the law when he and his girlfriend were arrested for the possession of dagga.

The pair is back in court for that case in April.
