Nkonyane passed away in hospital on Wednesday.

Earlier in the year, Nkonyane was among recipients of the Order of Ikhamanga, which recognises South Africans who have excelled in the fields of arts, culture, literature, music, journalism and sports.

In a statement, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) says Nkonyeni has been instrumental and played a leading role in shaping the arts and culture industry in South Africa.

She appeared on a number of classic programmes such as Generations, Home Affairs, Scandal on eTV and DStv's Igazi.

South Africa's pre-eminent film producer, Anant Singh says it was the privilege of working with Nkonyeni on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission film, Red Dust in which she starred opposite Chiwetel Ejiofor and Hilary Swank.

"Nomhle was extremely talented and was a role model and inspiration to the film and television community.”
