Vietnam has resumed its search for the Malaysia Airlines plane that went missing at the weekend.

This comes after they communicated with Malaysian authorities over rumours the plane had changed course, a military official said Wednesday.

"Search activities are being deployed as normal, expanding to the east and south of the plane's last known trajectory,"

Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, Vo Van Tuan, told dpa. Media reports Tuesday said military radar last detected the plane near Pulau Perak, an island in the strait between the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

On Wednesday morning, Vietnamese authorities said they were scaling back the search for the plane pending confirmation from Malaysia.

Tuan said authorities in Malaysia later contacted Vietnam saying they had no official information on the rumour.
