Smith appeared in court after handing himself over to the police on Thursday morning.

The politician has been implicated in corruption related to controversial facilities management company Bosasa. He also testified at the commission of inquiry into state capture last year.

This is the second consecutive day of high-level state capture commission arrests, after 6 suspects linked to the R255 million Free State asbestos audit tender were nabbed in three provinces on Wednesday.

Smith was granted bail of R30 0000 by the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court after briefly appearing on charges of corruption and fraud.

He is charged in his personal capacity as well as in his capacity as sole director and shareholder of company Euroblitz, alongside Angelo Agrizzi, former Bosasa COO, who did not appear in court for medical reasons.

"My client has already given evidence at the Zondo Commission when he called to do so and we of the view that no crime was committed,” said Smith’s attorney Yousha Tayob.

"I have no knowledge of what Agrizzi is going to say, other than the allegations he made against my client which we deny.”

The matter has been postponed 14 October.
