Violent protests expected in Joburg

Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) say they are anticipating violent protests in Braamfontein in Johannesburg on Thursday as members of the Joburg Social Movement take to the streets.

According to JMPD spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar, members of the movement will be marching to the Metro Centre - while hundreds of JMPD officers and members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) have already been deployed to the Johannesburg CBD.

"JMPD members will be diverting traffic while we advise the public to avoid roads in Braamfontein and around the Metro Centre between 9am and 3pm." he says.

Minnaar adds that they don't want motorists or members of the public to disrupt officers while they are out in full force carrying out their duties.

"We are expecting violent clashes with the officers as the same group previously broke glass windows of the Metro centre and smashed metro police vehicles," Minnaar says.

Traffic will be affected from 9am on Wednesday
