Vlakfontein murder accused found dead in Cape Town police cell
Updated | By Jacaranda Fm
One of the two men on trial for murdering seven family members in Vlakfontein has committed suicide in a holding cell in Cape Town.
Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubela confirms that the 27-year old Vusi Mabaso was transported from the prison in Krugersdorp where he was held, to Cape Town last week.
"This was part of the investigation against him," adds Makhubela.
Mabaso's body was discovered in a police holding cell shortly after he arrived.
Makhubela says an inquest docket has been opened and the case has been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
Mabaso and his co-accused, Fita Khube, were expected to apply for bail on Thursday.
They are accused of murdering three women and four children, whose bodies were found in a pile of sand in two separate rooms of the family's house in Vlakfontein.
